Grand Forks has a new full-time fire chief, who is also a familiar face at Grand Forks Fire/Rescue.

Grand Forks City Council on Monday confirmed the appointment of Rich Piché as Fire Chief.

A news release stated Piché is a long-time member of Grand Forks Fire/Rescue, where he started as a volunteer with Grand 16 years ago and was hired as a Deputy Chief for the department in late 2018.

He’s been acting fire Chief since former chief James Runciman after he was dismissed this past January after he turned himself in to Kelowna courts due to a civil suit in regards to unpaid contract work.

“Council is pleased to acknowledge that the department’s succession planning allowed for an internal candidate to be selected as the new Chief,” the release stated. “Congratulations Chief Piché!”

This is a developing story.
