And old-fashioned family activity was pulled from the dust of time and the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department’s basement and resurrected on Saturday as the city welcomed the Soapbox Derby back to its streets. Several children and adults hopped into homemade wood carts, some made by families and others that were found in the fire hall and hurled themselves down Wood Street to the delight of residents lined up along the track to watch.
All racers were given three runs and the best time taken for their score. By the end, four racers were declared winners: Dustin Everett, with a time of 11.50 seconds, Rain Hellend with a time of 11.11 seconds, Blake Harcus with a time of 11.64 seconds and Jacob Colin was the adult winner with a time of 9.02 seconds.
No one could say exactly when the last race was held, but Greenwood City Councillor Gerry Shaw said it was at least 15 years, adding his children raced in it.
There are plans to host another race next year.
